d'Hénnery collection?
« on: February 28, 2024, 08:28:46 am »
One failing of the many incredibly useful works by 19th century authors such as Sestini is that they never give a bibliography list of their sources.
One collection mentioned by Sestini (Ainslie collection) is that of "D'Hennery", (possibly D'Hénnery). It must have been a massive collection because a coin of Antioch, Pisidia is cited as D'Heanery pag. 551 no. 3706.

Mionnet's library list mentions some works by other people about d'Hennery but does not list a catalogue of the collection - has anyone ever heard of it ?

I think this has been some sort of (heavy) typo  :).

In "Catalogue des Médailles antiques et modernes, principalement des inédites et des rares, en or, argent, bronze, etc. du cabinet de M. d'Ennery ecuyer", Paris 1788, you find on page 551 a coin from Antioch in Pisidia with number 3706  :): https://www.digitale-sammlungen.de/de/view/bsb10684705?page=585

It seems to be (a variant of?) this type: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/6/6586

Yes, definitely a typo or just the printer's ink ran across a bit during printing. I had just changed the posting here and found the title in Mionnet's library (entry no. 333) when you came to the rescue  :D Thanks so much.

And yes, it's a var of numerous types (not just the one you quoted - there are others) with the river-god's name on the reverse - I wanted to check it before I add it to wwxls (the ever-growing ex-Isegrim xls file on the wildwinds server).

Thanks for finding it for me.
