valentinian I AE3 vot v mvlt x help with mintmark
« on: March 24, 2007, 09:00:10 am »
anyone make out the mintmark on this coin ??
Valentinian ?
AE4  19MM
OBV: DNVALENTINI-ANUS PF AVG daidemned bust right
REV: VOT V MVLT X  within wreath  (Because of vows, five years (already served), and with more vows, ten. )

MINT:

Also,  is there a trick to determine which one it is,  both valentinians use the same pf avg at the end of the legend

one I get the mintmark figured out,  I'll add to this post what I see as the correct attribution...If someone could confirm/correct  that would be great

Now for a newbie question   for a copper coin    is AE   or AS  used in attribution ?

cheers

what does the A signify  I found SIRM in the list,  but nothing with an A at first

would the A  be a "series number" in this case ?

I'm pretty sure it's the officina number, like Sirmium, 1st workshop.

You can tell this is Valentinian I by the size and style of the coin.  Valentinian I coins are AE3 (just an arbitrary size given since we don't know what they were actually called) and Valentinian II coins with this type of reverse are all AE4 (or smaller coins).  Valentinian I issued these coins at only two mints, Sirmium and Lugdunum.

this coin does not appear in the excel list on this site or on WW site  ( at least not with this mintmark for this valentinian) what does that mean ?

RIC IX, #8. pg159.  I would suppose that it does not show up in the excel sheets because the listing in RIC is all by itself and was just missed.  Wildwinds does not have a lot of things so it is not unusual that it isn't in there.
