My first coin. Constantius II?
« on: March 12, 2014, 09:24:51 pm »
Hello all,

So I purchased my first coin yesterday and wanted to know how I was coming along with identifying it. The only info in the flip was VF S-4011 which means nothing to me (guessing VF is very fine). When the dealer went to tell me about the coin I asked him not to tell me anything so I could use it as a tool to start learning how to identify.

So here we go. Please let me know if I am on the right path.

Its bronze!  ;D
Die Axis is 180
Its just over 15mm so that makes it AE4
weight is 2grams
Using the links like wildwinds and others on this site, I am pretty sure the observes is DNCONSTHN TIVSPFAV with bust right of Constantius II.
Reverse is SP(i think)ESREI PVBLICE. And this is where I am a bit stumped. In the bottom middle (ex? or mint mark?) to me it seems like it says CCON, but I can't find anything with that marking. The two closest are SCON or PCON. Maybe the S was cut off?

That is what I have so far.

Thanks,

Will

You pretty much have it:

Constantius II

Obv: DNCONSTAN-TIVS PFAVG
Rev: SPESREI-PVBLICE
Ex: SCON
ID: Arles RIC VIII 275
Year: 355-360AD

Of note, both the PCON and SCON exergue are RIC 275

That's a nice example you have.

Beautiful little coin!

I'd guess "VF" and "S-4011" on the flip mean "Very Fine" as you guessed and "Sear 4011", a very generalized catalog reference for this type and emperor.

Well I caught a mistake myself! I misread how to tell die axis. Its not 180. Its 0.

I do have one other question. The G is missing on the legend on the obverse side. It doesn't seem like a wear issue. Why is this? Is it just from the die that was used? Is it cut off due to the bust?

Thanks,

Will

Yes, this happens sometimes.
