Identification Help - Don't Know Where to Go
« on: September 28, 2017, 01:02:40 pm »
Hi!  I don't know where to go to have these identified.  I tried local coin appraisers, and they have no idea what they are. Do you happen to know what these coins are? Country of origin? Age? Or where I can go for assistance?

Any help is much appreciated!

Welcome to FORVM Jessica G2,

Only one coin per thread, otherwise it gets very confusing. Also give size & weight, this helps with the identification process. If you´re unsure please read FORVM rules.

Thanks

Welcome on the FORVM!

The smaller one is one of the famous Legionary Denarii, struck to pay the legionaries for the naval battle of Actium.
Marcus Antonius, AR Legionary Denarius. Patrae(?) mint, 32-31 BC.
obv. ANT AVG above, III VIR. R. P. C below, galley right
rev. LEG ?, legionary aquila between two standards.

I can't read the number of the legion behind LEG.

Best regards

Unfortunately, the rough edge indicates the Mark Antony denarius is probably a modern cast fake.  The second coin seems to show some signs of being fake also.

The larger appears to be a Reales of Ferdinand & Isabella

But it doesn't look right either -
