Olbia, Sarmatia - date and reference sought.
« on: August 17, 2012, 02:51:07 pm »
Hello,

I was lucky enough to get this coin recently, reasonably cheaply. I realise that it doesn't look much, but since I have devoted quite a lot of time to studying the city, I thought I'd splash out a bit since it is the most "historically" informative. Anyway...

I do not have a catalogue for Olbia (does one even exist?) but if anyone could give me a reference for it, that'd be super. There seem to be about 10 near-identical types.

Also, can anyone furnish a date for this specimin? This "type" was produced between the beginning of the 4th century to the 3rd century at least, but, as I said, there are numerous subgroups.

Also, just to check - has it been tooled do you reckon? Unfortunately, this seems quite common with bronzes of the region.

Thanks

Edit: I hope the pic worked, if not here is the direct link:

I think it is P.O.Karyshkovski who has worked about the coins with Borysthenes: The Borysthenes coins of Olbia, 1968.
But I don't know where you can get it.

I have written an article about Olbia the Happy. Please take a look if you are interested in Olbia. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=56449.msg350882#msg350882

Best regards

Sorry to dredge this one up, but you wouldn't happen to know if the article you mentioned exists in translation would you?

Best wishes,

I have several catalogs of coins of Olbia including BMC Sarmatia and the excellent work by Frolova and I would have been happy to look for your coin. However, the image does not show and the link to the forum album does not work ("Album does not exist")... So I am not sure how anyone can help if they cannot see the coin.

Sorry about that! I had since uploaded a better picture and deleted the old one from my gallery.

My apologies. Any thoughts?

The bowcase images in Frolova has the reverse images rotated so that the name OLBIA is at the top (upside down) so that you can see the letters or monogram better.

Yours has the delta I below and is Frolova 882.

300-275 BC.

I am attaching a scan of the Frolova image.
I would like to use your image for wildwinds.

Thanks! You're welcome to use it on wildwinds, please credit it though!

I think that you must be correct with the  :Greek_Iota: :Greek_Delta:, the Borysthenes head doesn't look too different either!

As a matter of interest, is it common for bronze coins like this to have a gouge through the cheek? I would have associated it more with silvers, but it definately seems to be deliberate on mine!

Thanks for your help!

By the way, which Frolova book are you using for the reference, please?
