Help Reading Date on Nabataean Drachm
« on: December 28, 2023, 03:55:24 pm »
Probably...
Silver drachm, cf. Meshorer Nabataean 124 ff.; Barkay CN 202 ff.; Al-Qatanani 1206, SNG ANS -, F, toned, flan flaw (sprue remnant) obv. left, weight 3.977g, maximum diameter 14.5mm, die axis 0o, Petra (Jordan) mint, 42 - 65 A.D.; obverse Nabataean legend, "Malichus the king, king of the Nabataeans, year..." (date obscure), laureate and draped bust of Aretas right; reverse Nabataean legend, "Shuqailat, his sister, queen of the Nabataeans", veiled and draped bust of Shuqailat

I find reading these drachms very difficult and with the die wear, this one is for me, probably impossible. If anyone knows these well and can read the date, please help!

Thanks!

Malichus II, year 23. Maybe 22, the third '1' is a bit scechy.

I gave up a little while ago and listed it as possibly year 17, thinking it might be 17 or 18 or 22 or 23. But I put year 17 as only a possible date.
