Trajan AE - a surprise rarity
« on: April 01, 2024, 11:27:10 pm »
Just recently I acquired this coin, described by the seller merely as a "Trajan As". The unusual reverse type caught my eye - it was unlike any I'd ever seen for Trajan AE's.

I had a tough time with the attribution, and for good reason: it turns out it is possibly only the second specimen known of a just-identified provincial type struck in the city of Neoclaudiopolis. The first coin was sold via auction last September; the auction house suggested it might be the first known specimen, and the coin was submitted to RPC Online, who created a post-publication entry for the type:

RPC did not cite any other specimens/references for the type so I assume that it was hitherto unpublished. My coin is now listed as specimen #2 on RPC Online. Sometimes you get lucky with an impulse buy.  ;)

Thanks for looking!
