Is my tetradrachm real or fake?
« on: July 04, 2011, 10:42:22 pm »
At first I was convinced it was real, but the more I read about the number of fake Alexander the Great tetradrachms were out there, I started to wonder.
Can anyone tell me if this is real or fake?  If real, maybe an approx value?
Thanks for your help!

The weight is close to 16 grams and the diameter is about 26mm.  Here's a photo of the edge.
Thanks.

Authentic, with good honest wear.  Nothing at all to suggest any issue with authenticity based on the image. Weight is consistent with the state of wear.

That's good to know.
Thanks for your opinion!

Where did you read about great numbers of fake tets? This is really not an area that I would think is as dangerous as many others.

When I first purchased this coin, I got home and did some research.  I probably found one discussion where someone had mentioned there were quit a few fakes of this particular coin.  Not knowing anything about this coin, I started getting paranoid and latched onto it as if it were fact.
Thanks for the info.

We've seen a lot of fakes, but there are also a great many real ones out there!

There are fakes but genuine Alexander Tets in this condition are not hard to find and not expensive. There are some high-quality fakes of all types of coins that are hard to spot unless you find an identical twin but it's hardly worth it for a coin like this.

That does not mean that it is not a nice coin. Depending on where you buy it, you might spend $120-$250, of course it's always possible to get it for much less from someone who doesn't know ancient coins or spend much more. That range is what I would consider reasonable. If you're selling you should expect less, again depending on where and how you sell.
