Re: Flavian gallery - A set of rare Alexandrian AE of Domitian
« Reply #500 on: February 16, 2017, 12:06:52 pm »
Hello everyone.

A great deal of Alexandrian coins has been offered recently. Not only the notorious Dattari collection has been dispersed, but another big collection by a German dealer. Both these sales included many Domitian rarities, rarely offered for sale. I tried to get as much as I could.

Here is a first set, including a couple of gems: did anybody else notice the special, warm colour of some Alexandrian bronze?

Kind regards

Alberto

many of these are known in very very few specimens.

Re: Flavian gallery - Titus Victoria As - Unpublished variant
« Reply #505 on: February 22, 2017, 05:19:38 pm »
Hello everyone,

I always enjoy spotting new types and varieties to add to my collection.

This time I got an interesting As of Titus presenting:

- an unusual layout of the reverse legend (from top right instead of low left)
- the lack of the Senatus signature (S C ).

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery - A second set of Alexandrian AE of Domitian - One new type
« Reply #508 on: February 23, 2017, 11:41:52 am »
Hello everyone,

as I wrote before, I'm actively increasing the Alexandria side of my collection.

I began to love deeply this series, mostly for the later issues (starting from the 10th reignal year = 90-91 A.D.) when the style was greatly improved, thanks to Roman engravers.

This second set includes a new unpublished type, a diobol with Rome in military dress on reverse.

Kind regards

Alberto

Thanks Jay,

I admit having underestimated the series, yet, until the recent dispersion of so large collections, Domitian coins from Alexandria were rarely offered in the market.

Cheers

Re: Flavian gallery - Dupondius of Domitian as Caesar - Crossed Cornucopiae
« Reply #511 on: February 27, 2017, 11:59:48 am »
Hello everyone,

this coin belongs to a series whose origin and purpose has been much debated.

In RIC 2.1 these coins were described as struck in Rome for circulation in Syria. Nowadays Ted Buttrey believes that they never circulated in the East and were meant to celebrate a special event, such as the fifth anniversary of Vespasian ascension to the throne.

The coin struck in the name of Domitian is generally scarcer than those struck in the name of his father and brother.

This specimen has somewhat rough surfaces, but far better relieves than my previous example.

Kind regards

Alberto
