Marc Antony Named Legions Repurposed Dies?
« on: August 01, 2023, 08:19:26 pm »

So, here is a photo from Schaefer’s die study depicting a Legion XII ANTIQUAE, but also clearly showing LEG [?] in the lower field. Is it known that named legion coins were struck in official mints with repurposed dies, and thus this coin simply reflects that whatever was used to fill in the engraving in the lower field was insufficient or fell away ? Is there another explanation?

Here is another example:

Looks like the engraver started, realised the error, and then carried on with the correct lettering.

Fascinating!

I know they reused dies for the regular legions, that's why the numbers start out crowded against the standard.  As they moved on to a new legion they would engrave new numbers.  I've never seen a named legion like that though, very intreresting piece
