Phoenician didrachm
« on: August 01, 2004, 05:00:57 pm »
I've just purchased this Phoenician didrachm of Tyre.
It should be Sear 5915.

I'm suspicious. if it is genuine.

1. The weight of the coin is 7.6 gr. instead of expected 8.5-8.6 gr.
2. What is on the left edge of the coin? Is it cast or just crystallisation?

Thank you for the comments.

P.S If you don't see the coin here please look at :

It looks fine to me.  Cast coins have uniform amount of bubbles across the entire coin (unless tooled.)  Yours looks like most of the damage is confined to the rim.

Coins with crystallization will weigh less than the book says.  'Corrosion products' leave crystalized coins during cleaning.

The Sear 5915 is weighted at 8.16g so closer to your weight than you think.  ;)
