When I first viewed the coin my immediate thought was that the specimen was ‘redenominated’, but I hesitated to weigh in because I couldn’t back my opinion with any facts. Very interesting indeed; so what may seem, to the uneducated eye, to be a 'mutilated' coin is in fact a very interesting piece of monetary
history. This should give one pause when examining a coin that seems to have been damaged (counter stamp? bankers' mark? re-valued? emperor's image or a deity defaced?)
