Domitian's COS X denarius
« on: March 12, 2012, 08:51:43 am »
Hello everyone.

According to Ian Carradice, the denarii of 84 a.D. have the lowest survival rate of the whole Domitian's coinage, so it's really hard to find them in the market.

Actually this coin is my first COS X denarius in a bunch of 130.

This is the first issue with the legend inscribed clockwise.

Kind regards

A great survivor of Gresham's law with a wonderful portrait as well. A very enviable piece.

Here is a group of Domitian's that survived because of, not despite of, Gresham's law:

It is one of the hoards explained in my online article, Triage for Coins: Reading Hoards and Coin Accumulations:

If the Domitian's don't quite grab you, the next pic usually does:

P.S. as everyone knows I am only interested in Roman Republican coins, there is 1 identifiable Roman Republican coin in each of these pictures. Where's Wally?

Fabulous! I love these types of hoard photos.

In regards to the "Waldo" Republican...top right in both pictures.

Very interesting.

I have Catherine Johns' book about the Snettisham Hoard.

At top right in the second picture I see two aurei of Augustus, however!

I think Andrew means the aureus of Julius Caesar in the middle of that picture towards the top.

Yes, I should have been more precise with the second picture - I didn't mean to include Augustus' grandchildren...and I indeed missed the Julius Caesar near the center! I was referring to the coin in that picture, top center right with the republican looking reverse.

Spot on.

There's probably two Republican denarii visible in the top hoard - in fact sitting on top of each other at the top right as David suggests - but just one identifiable with my eyes.
