APOLLO AND EAGLE? HELP TO ID PLEASE
« on: November 17, 2019, 07:03:02 pm »
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP!!
THIS COIN HAS BEEN MADE INTO A PENDANT AND IS ENCASED IN 14K GOLD.
IT MEASURES ABOUT 1" IN DIAMETER AND WEIGHS 16 GRAMS.
I TRIED TO FIND IT AND CAME UP WITH APOLLO AND EAGLE AS BEING SIMILAR, BUT NOT SURE, WITH ALL THE LETTERING AROUND THE EAGLE, WHAT WOULD THAT MEAN? I AM CURIOUS AS TO THE AGE AND WHAT THE COIN MIGHT BE MADE OF.
SOMEONE ENCASED IT FOR A NECKLACE, SO IT MUST HAVE MEANT QUITE A LOT TO THEM AT THE TIME.
THANKS SO MUCH!!
DEBBIE

There are three series of Alexandrine tetradrachms with regnal year 4:

Kleopatra III & Ptolemy IX:    https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3289104
Ptolemy XII:                         https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1011203
Kleopatra VII:                       https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=760041

see Otto Mørkholm, "Ptolemaic coins and chronology : the dated silver coinage of Alexandria", Museum Notes (American Numismatic Society), Vol. 20 (1975), pp. 7-24:
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=inu.30000108391032&view=image&seq=19

They are different in the style of the portrait. The most similar to the coin presented here seems to me the one on the coins of Kleopatra III & Ptolemy IX.

Oh my, I was really off with Apollo!! thank you both for the fascinatingly interesting information, a subject I knew little about. I can see how one could get hooked on this ancient history. So the coin must then be made of silver, and be authentic? I hold a real treasure in my hand!!
