Anglo-Saxon COTD
« on: March 02, 2018, 12:53:02 am »
It has been a while since I posted on the COTD Board. I have been unable to find the time to spend on this hobby recently.

I occasionally buy a coin which falls well outside my main interest areas. This is one such coin. Notably it is originally from the Bolton Percy Hoard:

Eanred; struck under moneyer Monne;Anglo-Saxon, Kings of Northumbria, York mint; AE Styca, Phase II, Group C; circa 837-841 AD Obverse: + EΛNRED REX, small cross pattée;Reverse: + MOИNE, small cross pattée; (13mm, 1.24 g, 7h); from the Bolton Percy Hoard, 1847; ex Triskeles Auction 328 (15 December 2017), Lot 714; Peter Moffat Collection, CNG eAuction 286 (5 September 2012), Lot 574 (part; misdescribed as being from the 1967 portion of the hoard); 'Property of a Nobleman' (Christie's, 14 April 1981), Lot 119; William Fennell Collection; References: North 186; SCBC 862

Hi,

I love these and have a small collection. I knew the late Peter Moffat well from the Yorkshire Numismatic Society and local fairs. I also live within 5 miles or so of Bolton Percy.

Regards,

Mauseus

I occasionally buy a coin which falls well outside my main interest areas.

I do that all too often. The danger is that the stray purchase leads to other stray purchases, which morphs into a new area of collecting. Does it ever end...

Nice coin, btw.
