Constantine I transfer die fake?
« on: May 29, 2019, 02:21:08 am »
Hello all,

I noticed what appears to be a pretty dangerous transfer die fake on Ebay. Coin 1 is the suspicious coin.

Coin 2 is perhaps the source of the transfer fake obverse die and it was sold by a reputable auction house in 2006. Notice that both coins appear to have been struck from the same obverse die, although coin 1 appears to have some die slippage.

However, coin 1 was supposed to have been struck in Thessalonica in 335 CE. Coin 2 was supposed to have been struck in Nicomedia in 330 CE. Firstly, I thought it unlikely that the obverse die will have been shared across Nicomedia and Thessalonica, and with a time gap of 5 years.

Secondly the obverse details of coin 1 seems to be very similar to coin 2. The outline of both coins are very similar, especially from 6h to 12h. For example the obverse dotted border cuts off on both coins at about 11h.

Any thoughts if this is a transfer die fake? If there's agreement that it's a fake, I'll add it to the Fake Reports.

EDIT: the seller is on the NFSL.

It looks terrible. It doesn't strike me as 'pretty dangerous' at all. You're right about the impossibility of the movement of dies between those two mints.

I stand corrected! I thought the style of the reverse looked ok actually.. and the obverse although seemingly double struck is derived from an authentic die.

Any consensus on whether this is a fake?
