A new Claudius II type?
« on: November 02, 2020, 04:59:12 am »
Hi colleagues!
I have just bought this coin of Claudius II

D/ IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG
R/ FIDES EXERCITI, no mintmark

It seems to be a 1st issue from Rome mint probably from 11 officina as the common short type legend reverse "FIDES EXERCI" listed at n. 274 of new RIC http://www.ric.mom.fr/en/coin/274?q=274&page=1&mod=result&x=0&y=0&from=quick

Is it actually a new type or did I get my search wrong?

Thanks for the reply!
Have you some details about provenance? is it the only one known?
Many thanks.

It was discussed in 2017 on another forum but no answers or info on it were provided.

Just a detail: the other coin seems to present a dot between the E and the X of EXERCITI.  A mark to distribute letters and spaces more easily ?

yes there is a dot between the two part of the reverse legend.
I think that the two coins belong to two distincted phases of the same issue.
