John II Comnenus imitative local issue?
« on: April 02, 2016, 09:12:35 am »
A small, light and thin piece this (18mm, 1.16g), but somewhat intriguing.  There is no sign of the normal decorative cross within the nimbus of Christ’s bust on the obverse.  I am wondering if it could be an example of the CLBC 3.3.2 Imitative Local Issue described on page 115-6 of CLBC?  But the stemma isn’t totally flat as it is on the CLBC specimen, which is a contra-indication.

So opinions and help wanted, please.

Thank you, Strategos, it's an interesting suggestion, but I'm finding it hard to interpret the obverse of my coin as 'Christ seated on a backless throne' rather than as a  'bust of Christ'.

I would lean back to  CLBC 3.3.2, I can appreciate the the Bust of Christ  holding Gospels in left hand pretty clearly, where the 3.3.2 imitative issue does not.

not sure what to make of no nimbus on the bust of Christ? is it blundered or a poor strike?
