I can't pass up a decent middle imperial bronze...

Caracalla. AD 198-217. Æ Sestertius (35mm, 21.46 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 214. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Mars standing left, holding Victory and shield set on ground to right; spear to right; to left, captive seated left. RIC IV 524c; Banti 50. Brown and green surfaces, lightly smoothed, flan crack. VF. Rare.

From the Summer Haven Collection.

A rare mule, coming from only one obv. die, that I must admit I overlooked in the sale itself!

Caracalla is still BRIT, so the coin is from an old obv. die; in 214 his correct title was GERM.

You have acquired a wonderful coin ecoli. As you say it would have been difficult to pass up. The portrait is strong and expressive and the reverse beautifully designed. A great addition, and the kind of coin that will not only interest the experienced collector as a rare mule, but one that in my experience will also spark an interest in the non collector who can appreciate at as a fine piece of art from the ancient world.

Best regards,

Steve
