More than half a century ago, when I
had the privilege of taking a seminar with that year's Sather Professor, Georges Daux of the Ecole Française d'Athènes, though the seminar was on the
epigraphy of
Thasos it took us also into rules and regulations prohibiting setting up stuff alien to the cult of
Herakles within its boundaries. Thus one learned that such prohibitions only occur when there are in fact infringements and the the
Herakles of Hollywood and comic books weren't what was really important: that is, I learned these things as realities.
So I was much taken by the 16mm plump little bronze, which in spite of its diminutive size has much of the character of a large statue. And so I purchasd it, and here it is.
