Bracteate ID request
« on: August 01, 2013, 10:37:31 pm »
This 0.41g 16.5mm silver came in an envelope marked Hohlpfennig, Hamburg c.1300's AD.   It appears to be a gateway with a cross above.  Can anyone confirm, correct or expand on this?  I have been unable to find a photo of a similar item online so a link would be appreciated.

Hi Doug,

I don't know a lot about these coins, but the following old reference still appears to be in use concerning coins from Hamburg and may be of interest to you:

Hamburgische Münzen und Medaillen:
Herausgegeben von einem Ausschusse des Vereins für Hamburg. Geschichte u. redigirt von O. C. Gaedechens (Google eBook).

You find a number of similar coins on pages 330 and 336 although none of them appears to be an exact match of your coin;

Cheers, Jan
