Moving coins out of PVC holders
« on: April 25, 2020, 09:29:52 pm »
I've made a mistake of putting some of my coins into flips produced by a reputed European company. As I learned after doing some research, the flips were made of PVC even though they were advertised by the seller as safe to ancient coins (or any coins for that matter). I've already ordered saflips and I will move my coins into them as soon as possible. Fortunately, there's no visible damage and residue. The coins weren't in the PVC holders for long anyway, since I purchased them at the beginning of this year.

My question is - should I do anything before putting the coins into saflips? Should the coins be washed or bathed in order to clean any possible microscopic damage or slivers of PVC?

I would appreciate any help.

Get some acetone and put them in a dish for a short period.

I don't think you need to do anything.   Most coins from most dealers have been in PVC for much longer periods of time, because the archival types do not withstand flexing and repeated handling.  (Forum's flips are much sturdier and thicker , however,.)
I have never heard of treating coins that do not show build up of pvc disintegration.

Pure acetone or diluted with water? I just want to go safe.

But could there be some microscopic PVC residue left?

The most common risk from PVC is goop that you have to clean off the coin.

I agree with PMah.  If you don't see or feel a problem don't do anything.

If there is goop or residue then go mat's acetone route.

The pure, hardware store sells it. Don't use nail polish remover as it has other additives in it.
