A new obv. bust type for Elagabal from Nikopolis
« on: February 02, 2009, 04:40:40 pm »
Hi!

Today I came across this new type of Elagabal from Nikopolis:

Moesia inferior, Nikopolis ad Istrum, Elagabal, AD 218-222
AE 23, 6.4g
obv. AVT KM AVRH - ANTWNEINOC.
Bust, cuirassed with scale armour, seen from behind, laureate, r.
rev. [NI]KOPOLITWN PROC ICTRON (ON ligate)
Eagle, with spread wings, stg. frontal on wreath, head turned l.
ref. not in AMNG; not in Varbanov (engl.)

This obv. type, cuirassed and laureate, is not listed for Elagabal from Nikopolis. All cuirassed only busts are radiate and not laureate!

BTW The rev. type is also not listed.

I hope it's worth to be shared!

Best regards

An addition: Now I have heard from Curtis Clay in the German Forum that the obv. type is known from 2 AE16, Blancon Liste 41, 2003, Nr.922 and Nr.924, but with different rev.

Best regards

Here are 2 from my photo file, the one with Demeter (?) is 21mm, the other 27mm.

Isn't Jochen's coin a  double die match for Varb(E) 3834 (obverse Ke) and Arminius' coin?
