This silver
dirham is from the Sultanate of Rûm, which was located in central
Anatolia. It was struck by the
Sultan Kaykhusraw between 1236 and 1245 AD. I am spectacularly unfamiliar with the coinage of the Sultanate and possess no reference material on it. I'm not even sure if I have the photographed the
inscription right way up! Although I understand it translates as something like- 'Great
Sultan,
Help of the World and of the Faith Kaykhusraw'.
But it was one of those things. Once i saw it I just
had to have it!
I'm going to post the coin over in the
Medieval forum as well and ask if any
members know any references for it.
