Medieval Lion, Sun and Stars COTD
« on: October 08, 2023, 08:12:25 am »
This silver dirham is from the Sultanate of Rûm, which was located in central Anatolia. It was struck by the Sultan Kaykhusraw between 1236 and 1245 AD.  I am spectacularly unfamiliar with the coinage of the Sultanate and possess no reference material on it. I'm not even sure if I have the photographed the inscription right way up! Although I understand it translates as something like- 'Great Sultan, Help of the World and of the Faith Kaykhusraw'.

But it was one of those things. Once i saw it I just had to have it!

I'm going to post the coin over in the Medieval forum as well and ask if any members know any references for it.

Just back from the Medieval, Islamic and Crusader forum.

Many thanks to Pekka K. He provided a useful reference and also informed me that I did indeed photograph the reverse upside down!

Also, thanks to Jan P who helped a lot with more information.
