Caria - stater fraction? Fake?
« on: March 14, 2025, 08:47:59 am »
Bought in a package of junk silver.  A careful test with chrome liquid confirms that it is silver.
I do not collect ancient coins. Preliminary identification via image search suggests a steter from Caria which should weigh about 14 grams but this only weighs 5.2 grams. The diameter is 18.2 x 18.9 mm.
Please help me identify what it is.

It looks like the city of Poseidon on the island of Carpathos, third stater, HGC 6.1353.

As for originality, I can't say, because I'm not very familiar with these coins. At first glance, it looks rather good.

Same with me :-\.

... There's no diameter and weight is nearly correct for full stater. ...
What Pekka showed is a fake from the Forvm's fake reports.

I wonder if there is someone in Poland with whom this coin could be consulted.
