Valerian - not in RIC
« on: August 07, 2007, 03:35:59 pm »
Greetings again!

This Valerian antoninianus is 18 by 20 mm and 2.4 grammes.  It's a bit clearer in the hand than on this photo, but it is definitely:

Obverse: Radiate, draped (and cuirassed? I always find it hard to tell) bust right. IMP VALERIANVS AVG.

Reverse: Jupiter standing left, holding out thunderbolt at waist level in right hand, leaning on a tall sceptre with left hand, chlamys hanging from left shoulder.  IOVI CONS-ERVAT.

And there is a clear S or Stigma in left fieldRIC does not seem to have any coins of Valerian with this field mark.  Can anyone help attribute this, please?

Hi Moonmoth,

Your coin is RIC Vi :94 struck at Rome in A.D.258 rated as (c). There is a note in RIC indicating that the S mintmark, as on your coin, exists on coins struck in A.D.258.
P and Q mintmarks also exist on coins struck in this same year.

Alex.

Thanks - I missed a footnote!  Next time I'll wait a day and look again.
