FECVNDITAS AVG - A woman standing, extends her right hand over a small figure standing beside her; in her left hand a cornucopiae. Third brass of Gallienus (Banduri).

Fecundity used to be ascribed on coins of females only. It is surprising to find her on the coin of an emperor: even of so eccentric an one as Gallienus. In the Imperial Cabinet at Vienna there are two denarii of Severus Alexander with the legend FECVND AVGVSTAE, but there can be no doubt that this reverse was erroneously transferred from the coinage of Julia Mamaea to that of her son. And from this circumstance it becomes probable that the reverse now before us ought to be restored to the coinage of Salonina, the wife of Gallienus (Eckhel vii 407).

"The reverse of this coin (observes Eckhel), vii 289) might lead to a suspicion of its genuineness, since (as above remarked) FECVNDITAS is a legend, with one exception, not found on the coins of emperors, and the type represents Fortuna, and not Fecunditas. But, as Bimard, whose copious observations on this coin it will be an advantage to consult, vouches for its undoubted antiquity, and I, not having seen the coin, being therefore unable to offer any arguments on the other side, am well content to aquiesce in the judgment of so eminent a writer."
