Prunt

On glass vessels, an elaborate decorative glass blob, either preformed or shaped during application.   The umbilical prunt, typical for the Rhineland and northern Gaul in the late fourth and early fifth centuries was shaped free-hand, first pushing in the center of the blob forming an indentation and then drawing the glass out thin from the center before snapping it off, leaving a small umbro rising from the center of the depression.  Preformed, stamped prunts were used in southern France, the Rhineland and in the East (especially on early Islamic glass).
