Gemmae. Gems or precious stones. --The use of these as ornaments for the head is said to have begun under Aurelian. Other emperors neither unwillingly nor unfreely followed the same example; and thenceforward pearls and other jewels are seen on the diadems of the Augusti and Augustae.
