EUGENIUS, a usurper during the reign of Theodosius I. Of obscure birth, Eugenius began by teaching grammer and rhetoric, afterwards rising to the position of master of the palace under Valentinian II. He was proclaimed Augustus at Vienne by the general Arbogastes, who murdered Valentinian II in A.D.392, but who kept the imperial authority in his own hands. Eugenius, acknowledged as emperor throughout Gaul and in other provinces of the West, allied himself with the Germans and the Franks. Attacked by Theodosius near Aquileia, in Cisalpine Gaul, he was defeated, taken prisoner, and executed (A.D.394). Arbogastes took his own life. Bearing the legend D N EVGENIVS P F AVG, his small bronze coins are of the highest rarity, silver rare, and gold, very rare.
