CALIGÆ. - Military sandals used by the Romans. "The caliga was a heavy sole, lashed with thongs to the lag, and armed with stout nails. The emperors gave largesses of nails to the soldiers, donativum clavarium, which perhaps meant also money to purchase them." - Capt. Smyth, p.28.
