RIC VII, TRIER 352, CONSTANTINE II, UNLISTED MINTMARK [IRREGULAR COIN]

OBVERSE

CONSTANTINVSIVNNOBC [CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C]; bust l., laur., dr., cuir.

REVERSE

BEATATRAN-QVILLITAS [BEATA TRANQVILLITAS]; globe set on altar inscribed VO/TIS/XX; above, three stars. PTRE in exergue.

NOT IN RIC

UNLISTED MINTMARK. Specimen similar to TRIER 352 except for PTRE in m.m. instead of PTR•. Note that m.m. PTRE is attested on bronze coinage only for later Providentiae issue (TRIER 504-508; see example of TRIER 505 with similar obv.). Good style and lettering but probably an ancient imitation.

Note, however, that also TRIER 352 (the unique specimen from Berlin cited in RIC) seems to be semi-barbarous and may be regarded as an ancient imitation as well. An engraver's error would be hard to explain.
