---------- Interesting Things About Ancient Coins ---------- |
Barbarians, Soldiers, Huts and Trees |
here
is a well-known Roman coin type that shows a soldier, possibly meant to be the Emperor or a personification of valour, guiding or dragging a barbarian from a hut beneath a tree. The barbarian is docile and does what the large, well-armoured Roman with the big spear wants him to do.
These coins belong to a series which all have the same reverse legend, FEL TEMP REPARATIO, which I have seen translated as anything from "Happy Days are Here Again" to "A Lucky Time to Recruit."
Thirteen mints produced these coins for about two years, 348-350. They were struck for the emperors Constans and Constantius II. Although the basic description stays the same, each Imperial mint produced trees which were unique to them. This is well known. In fact, I have read that you can identify the mint by looking at the tree. But this isn't completely true, and there are a lot of other interesting details, some of which are analysed on the next page.
ere is a gallery of hut coins organised by mint and RIC type. My thanks to Dane Helvetica for the RIC lists I started with and the help in sorting out which type was which, from which I learned a lot. Of course I still ended up with my own copy of RIC VIII .. and a knowledge of just how many varieties I don't have! RIC lists 246 varieties. I have less than half of that number, and that includes several that aren't documented in RIC. The only mint for which I have all listed varieties is Thessalonica, with a meagre 8 listed types! But I do also have one unlisted variety.
The RIC list for each mint is shown below, with links to such coins as I have. If the link is active, it will take you to my coin. If it's not active, I don't have one. You can also click on any coin image to see the complete coin.
There are now 264 hut coins in my collection or that have passed through my hands, broken down like this:
Listed in RIC VIII: 128 types and 115 duplicates.
Unlisted officinas, bust types, mintmarks and other features: 21.
Only one of each type is displayed on line.
Some of the unlisted types might simply be errors, but not all of them. So, based on this sample, from this period, a good proportion of those that you might collect won't have been documented. That's a lot of knowledge still to be gained even before you consider the many lesser features of these coins that haven't been analysed.

Diadem type: Pearl, or laurel and rosette. Legend break: REPA - RATIO Spear position: The spear point is downwards, between the soldier's legs. Tree types: Two very different types, as illustrated. The right hand illustration is the more common type and looks like a fig. Typical hut: Simple construction, diagonal or horizontal crosspieces, short hooked overhang, pointed end. Typical small figure: Robed, left hand not shown, upright, looks upwards.
Comments: The right hand coin shown here has a circle in the upper field, which I now think is an ancient attempt to start boring a hole rather than an integral feature of the coin. Officina 4 for type 68, Alexandria 68 ALEΔ, is not listed in RIC, but has been reported to exist. I don't have one. |

Diadem type: Pearl. Legend break: REPA - RATIO Spear position: The spear point is downwards, between the soldier's legs. Tree type: One type. The trees on these coins look more like giant sprays of millet. Typical hut: Simple construction, twinned diagonal crosspieces, clearly defined entrance, short overhang or none, rounded end. Typical small figure: Robed, left hand held to mouth or face, upright, looks upwards. Those which appear to show no left hand might just be worn or obscured by corrosion and patina.

ost of these coins are common. Really nice examples can cost a bit, as is true of all bronze coins. But
nearly all of the coins on this page were quite inexpensive and easy to collect, requiring only time and patience. Please see the next page for more analysis of hut coins.

he

The greek Epsilon Є is clearly distinguishable from the straight-backed Roman E, as shown in the mintmark from Thessalonica on the left. The archaic character Digamma for officina 6 is, on these coins, almost indistinguishable from an upper case S, as seen in the mintmark from Constantinople on the right, and it is represented by one on this page. (It does look different on many other coin types.)
--------------------------------- Key To References --------------------------------- |
The references by each mint are from Volume VIII of The Roman Imperial Coinage by J P C Kent. It is generally referred to as RIC VIII. I also had a lot of help matching up these coins from Dane "Helvetica" Kurth, whose excellent page on Fallen Horsemen is here: [Helvetica's Fallen Horseman page], and whose tables of RIC references are here: [Helvetica's RIC lists].
An improved hut coin spreadsheet is downloadable here. This sheet is a minor modification of Dane's, and could not have been prepared without her invaluable original work and generous help. Dane's sheets cover many, many types of coin: this one covers only the hut coins.
My other reference book for these coins and many others is "Late Roman Bronze Coinage" (LRBC) by R A G Carson, P V Hill and J P C Kent, published by Sanford J Durst Numismatic Publications, Rockville Centre, NY.
