L'interpretazione
del rovescio indicata dal cofanetto è
dunque errata, il personaggio del rovescio è la
Pace, non la Spes (la Speranza)6. E dunque la
catalogazione della moneta non può essere
quella indicata dal lettore.
Per quanto concerne l'autenticità, nei limiti
di una valutazione a distanza, osservo che la moneta
presenta caratteristiche fisiche, generali e di stile
non dissimili da quelle dei conî autentici del
periodo. In considerazione del suo stato di usura, il
valore commerciale della moneta non dovrebbe superare
i 100,00€.

Dalla tabella
si evince che le caratteristiche fisiche della moneta
di figura (25,2g, 34mm, 6h) non si discostano da
quelle dei conî d'epoca dello stesso tipo.
(2) La datazione della moneta (103-111 d.C.)
è stata fatta sulla base del titolo di Console,
conferito a Traiano per la quinta volta nel 103 (COS
V) e poi rinnovato nel 112 (COS VI).

(4) SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI. Nella traduzione
la leggenda del dritto va letta congiuntamente con
quella del rovescio in modo da risultare così:
"All'Imperatore Cesare Nerva Traiano, Augusto,
Germanico, Dacico, Pontefice Massimo, investito dei
poteri di Tribuno, Console per la quinta volta, Padre
della Patria, all'Ottimo Principe, il Senato e il
Popolo di Roma (dedicano). La sigla S C sul rovescio
della moneta (SC sta per Senatus Consulto=per decreto
del Senato) sta ad indicare la competenza esclusiva di
quell'istituzione nella gestione delle emissioni in
bronzo (le emissioni in oro e argento, che sono prive
della sigla suddetta, erano di esclusiva competenza
dell'imperatore).
(5) La Pace, latrice del ramo d'ulivo e
della cornucopia (simbolo della ricchezza e del
benessere), calpesta il Dacio ribelle ed
esemplifica la Pax Romana, così come
celebrata dai versi di Virgilio che fa dire ad
Anchise le seguenti epiche parole (Eneide, VI, vv.
851-853 - v. link),
"Tu regere imperio populos Romane memento: haec
tibi erunt artes, pacisque imponere morem, parcere
subiectis et debellare superbos" (=Ricordati,
Romano, di imporre la tua autorità sui
popoli, questo sarà il Tuo ruolo, imporre
usanza di pace, risparmiare quanti si sottomettono
e stroncare chi s'oppone).
(6) Ad avviso dello
scrivente, l'interpretazione del tipo del rovescio
indicata dal cofanetto è errata; il
personaggio femminile ivi rappresentato non
può essere la Spes il cui attributo
è il fiore (non la cornucopia!); la Spes
nella monetazione romana, in particolare in quella
di Traiano, è simboleggiata da una giovane
donna che incede, quasi a passo di danza, recando
un fiore e sollevando con la mano l'orlo
posteriore della veste (come nel link che segue: http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=16302).
Invece nella moneta di figura abbiamo la Pace che
solleva il piede destre per calpestare il capo del
ribelle dacio. La moneta è usurata nella
parte inferiore del rovescio, sicché
risulta impossibile osservare il Dacio, tuttavia
l'apertura delle gambe del personaggio femminile
è compatibile con la postura della Pace,
non con quella della Spes.
