Trajan, AD 98-117. A scarce bronze dupondius attributed as RIC 586. Obverse:
Radiate head right with aegis. Legend is IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER
DAC PM TRP COS V PP. Reverse: Trophy with round and hexagonal shields.
Legend is SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI SC. History: MARCVS VLPIVS TRAIANVS, born
near Seville, Spain in 52 to Marcia and Marcus Ulpius Trajanus, pursued
a military career and was appointed Governor of Germania Superior by Nerva
in 97 shortly before being adopted by him. He became Augustus upon Nerva's
death on January 25, 98. Although best known for adding Dacia to the Empire
by a series of wars (101-106), he also built many public works and administrated
ably. The Empire reached its maximum size in 117 after his Parthian victories
(114-117). He died on August 8, 117, was deified, and buried in his monumental
column in Rome. Condition: The coin is in VF condition with a somewhat
rough, dark green patina and bronze highlights. There is a pit in the patina
on the cheek. Currently $189.50 Oct-14-00.

Concludo osservando che le caratteristiche
fisiche, generali e di stile di questa bella, ben conservata e ben fotografata
moneta appaiono coerenti con i conî d'epoca.

Dalla tabella si evince che le
caratteristiche fisiche della moneta di figura (13,1 g, 28mm, 6h) sono
comparabili con quelle dei conî d'epoca.
(2) La
datazione della moneta (103-111 d.C.) è stata fatta dal RIC sulla
base di COS V, conferito a Traiano nel 103 e mantenuto nella monetazione
sino al conferimento del COS VI nel 112.

di Roma) è l'istituzione che dedica la moneta all'Ottimo Principe,
Imperatore, Cesare, Nerva, Traiano, Augusto, Germanico, Dacico, Pontefice
Massimo, Console per la quinta volta, Padre della Patria.
(5) Il
trofeo con le armi strappate al nemico è presente nella monetazione
romana sin dal periodo repubblicano. Nella monetazione di Traiano allude
