DESCRIZIONE MONETA Premetto, innanzitutto, che la moneta in questione è stata mostrata a diversi specialisti, dei quali il 90% ha definito la moneta rara se non UNICA. La sto facendo vedere in giro ancora, per avere altri pareri. La moneta presenta: ( la descrizione è effettuata con termini comuni ) sul lato anteriore la riproduzione di una brocca e di un bastone, ricurvo nella parte superiore, poggiati su di una linea orizzontale. Sotto la linea è presente la scritta: IMPER. Il tutto circondato da una decorazione di fogliame; sul lato posteriore la riproduzione di un volto di profilo, probabilmente femminile e, in dimensioni ridotte, di un uccello, probabilmente un fenicottero. Dopo attento confronto tra la moneta in esame e quelle sicuramente autentiche di cui ai link precedenti, osservo che la moneta di figura presenta caratteristiche fisiche e di stile accettabili. Ravviso invece qualche problema nell'aspetto generale, in particolare trovo innaturali il colore rossiccio e la superficie inspiegabilmente butterata del tondello. Il bordo della moneta andrebbe osservato da vicino per capire la genesi della zigrinatura che si intravede lungo il bordo destro del rovescio. Non posso escludere che il colore rossiccio sia dovuto ad un'alterazione fotografica e che la riserva dianzi espressa cada in seguito ad un esame diretto. Altro non saprei dirle.

Dalla tabella si evince che le caratteristiche fisiche della moneta comunicate dal lettore (19 mm, 4g, 2h) sono comparabili con quelle dei conî d'epoca. Se la moneta è autentica, essa è certamente in lega d'argento quasi puro (l'alluminio era sconosciuto come metallo dai Romani - si veda in proposito il link).
(2) Il personaggio femminile raffigurato sul dritto della moneta è la Pietas, riconoscibile dal suo emblema, la cicogna. La Pietas rappresenta l'amore filiale mentre la cicogna è l'uccello che, secondo la credenza, sorreggeva sulle proprie ali i genitori anziani (v. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Pietas). Dunque il tipo del dritto della moneta di figura, battuta nell'81 a. C. da Quinto Cecilio Metello Pio insieme ad un'altra con lo stesso dritto (v. link) ma con leggenda di esergo Q.C.M.P.I. (che sta per Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius), allude all'amore filiale e al "cognomen", Pius, che Quinto Cecilio Metello aveva meritato per l'azione svolta per il rientro dall'esilio, nel 99 a. C., del padre Metello Numidico. Il che ci porta indietro al periodo delle guerre civili e alle lotte tra Mario e l'aristocrazia senatoria di cui Metello Numidico faceva parte. Metello Numidico, console nel 109 a.C., aveva condotto con successo tre spedizioni contro Giugurta, a seguito delle quali aveva celebrato il trionfo nel 106 a. C.; censore nel 102 a. C., si era contrapposto alla legge agraria a favore dei veterani di Gaio Mario e aveva preferito l'esilio volontario a Rodi, dal quale era stato richiamato nel 99 a.C. dalla reazione oligarchica. Aveva ottenuto il titolo "Numidico" in riconoscimento delle sue imprese. Era morto nel 91 a.C. (v. link).
Tornando al nostro monetiere, Metello Pio prese parte attiva alla guerra sociale nella quale combatté agli ordini di Silla. Nell'88 vinse e uccise il capo dei Marsi, Q. Pompedio Silone; l'anno successivo ebbe il comando delle operazioni contro i Sanniti e lottò contro Mario che minacciava Roma; lasciò l'Italia per l'Africa, per lottare contro i partigiani di Mario (85), che poi sconfisse presso Faenza. Fu console con Silla nell'80, combatté con varia fortuna dal 79 al 72 contro Sertorio in Spagna; ottenne il trionfo nel 71, morì nel 64 (notizie tratte dal Diz. Enc. Italiano). Nell'81, quando la moneta fu battuta, Metello Pio comandava le operazioni militari nell'Italia Settentrionale contro i generali di Mario, Carrinas, Norbanus e Carbo (notizie tratte dal Crawford e dal link che segue http://tinyurl.com/28zjm8).
(3) Gli emblemi  sul rovescio della moneta, lituo e caraffa, alludono ad un augurato, ad un ufficio sacerdotale, cioè, retto verosimilmente da un personaggio molto vicino a Metello Pio. Il Crawford respinge l'idea che l'augure potesse essere stato il padre del monetiere in quanto in letteratura non è attestato questo ufficio a nome di Metello Numidico; egli avanza invece l'ipotesi che l'augurato (probabilmente conferito nell'82 a. C.) fosse quello di Silla  che era il capo della parte politica di riferimento per Metello Pio. A sostegno della tesi Crawford ricorda alcune analogie tra la moneta in esame ed una di Silla (v. link): lituo, caraffa sono presenti in entrambe; la corona, che fa da bordo per il rovescio, era simbolicamente presente, trattenuta dall'aquila con il becco, in un rilievo trionfale di Silla sulla Via del Mare. In quanto augure, Silla aveva attestato con la sua presenza il passaggio della Lex Curiata con la quale gli erano stati conferiti i poteri di magistrato. IMPER (leggenda del rovescio) sta per imperator e imperator era colui che deteneva l'imperium [il potere supremo militare e insieme giudiziario proprio del dittatore, del console e del pretore, e anche dei promagistrati, proconsole, propretore (v. voce relativa del Dizionario Italiano - Latino Bianchi Lelli Le Monnier)]. Insomma, da un  lato c'era Silla (appoggiato dalla sua parte politica, compreso Metello Pio con la sua moneta), che si riteneva investito dei poteri di magistrato o, quanto meno, avanzava diritti in tal senso, dall'altra c'erano i suoi avversari che lo consideravano invece decaduto essendo riusciti a farlo dichiarare hostis (nemico) (v. Crawford pag. 374). La moneta esprimerebbe dunque simbolicamente, nell'interpretazione del Crawford, un messaggio coerente con le rivendicazioni di Silla nel confronto politico con i suoi avversari.
