VICTORINUS 269-71AD

The main obverse legends and reverse types of Victorinus arranged by mint and issue. The easiest way to differentiate the products of the two mints is by the bust type; Trier uses a draped and cuirassed radiate bust whereas the Cologne mint uses a bust that is only cuirassed. There is some duplication of the reverse types between the issues which may be resolved by referring the Cunetio hoard publication.

Victorinus, it would appear, was no ordinary soldier when he took charge of the Gallic throne. Indeed, many view him as the natural successor to Postumus as he had been co (Gallic) Consul with Postumus in 268. A mosaic from the house of Victorinus before he was made emperor is reproduced below.
