THE MOGHULS

Zahir-ud-Din Mohammad surnamed Babur founded the Moghul dynasty (Moghul - an adaptation of mughul, the Persian word for Mongol) in India which lasted more than two centuries.   The coinage of the Mughal empire occupies a unique position in Indian history of numismatics.  Endowed with the imagination and magnificence of Akbar and Jahangir and fostered by the later Mughal emperors, Mughal presented a breath taking example of coinage art and the wealth.  In the following sessions, an attempt has been made to explain the important developments of so called Mughal era of India and their prosperous economy through their coinage.
