It was the period when history of India was written for the first time, with a portrait coinage. The art in the coinage was upgraded with the introduction of Indo Greek coinage.

Realism, expression, modelling appeared in the coinage which overrode the punch marked symbols eventually and the influence of Hellenistic art was well recognized. Perhaps no class of Indian coins has attracted more attention than these, which mark the Western and Eastern cultural mix.
