The Gallic Empire The Tetrarchy

Rome: Aurelian's Monetary Reforms

270 to 285 A.D.

Aurelian continued the tradition of army officers seizing power. He managed to stabilise the Empire to some extent and brought the Gallic Empire back into the fold. He reformed the coinage, producing better quality coins containing 5% silver. Further soldier emperors seized power in ever more inventive ways. However, on the death of Carinus in 283 AD, all was to change.
