CONSTANTINE II (Flavius Claudius Constantinus)

Flavius Claudius Constantinus was the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta and was born in 314.

Following Constantine's wars with Licinius, a treaty was signed at Serdica on 1st March 317. Constantine's sons Crispus and Flavius Claudius Constantinus (Constantine II) were proclaimed Caesars, as was Licinius junior.

In 328 he was sent to administer Gaul, where he distinguished himself against the Goths.

Constantine died on 22nd May 337, and his surviving sons, Constantine II, Constantius II and Constans succeeded him, each with the title Augustus (9th September 337).

Constantine II's share of the Empire included Britain, Gaul, and Spain.

Constantine had designs on his brother Constans's territory and in 340, invaded Italy.

The invasion was a fiasco, and Constantine's army was ambushed and he was killed near Aquileia.
