LUCIUS VERUS [Lucius Ceionius Commodus, later known as Lucius Aurelius Verus]

• Lucius Verus was born at Rome on 15th December 130 AD. He was the son of Lucius Ceionius Commodus, Hadrian's adopted heir and Caesar under him (Aelius Caesar 136-138).
• Marcus Aurelius had caught the attention of Hadrian who betrothed him to Ceionia Fabia, the daughter of Lucius Ceionius Commodus (Aelius) (136).
• When Lucius Ceionius Commodus senior died, Antonininus Pius was named as Hadrian's adopted heir, but as part of the package, Antonininus was to adopt Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Ceionius Commodus junior.
• On the death of Hadrian, Antonininus Pius became emperor (138).
• On the death of Antoninus Pius in 161 Marcus Aurelius became emperor and Lucius Ceionius Commodus, at Marcus's insistence, equal co-emperor, taking the name Lucius Verus.
• Lucius was successful in wars against the Parthians, but was criticized for enjoying the good life too much.
• In 168, both emperors were returning from quelling Germanic attacks on the Danube frontier when Verus suffered a stroke and died.
