Q. Cassius Longinus

Q. Cassius Longinus was the first cousin of C. Cassius Longinus, one of the assassins of Julius Caesar who allied himself with Brutus against Octavian and Antony. In 54 BC, Q. Cassius Longinus went as questor to Pompey to Spain, where he was universally hated on account of his rapacity and cruelty. In 49 BC he was Tribune of the Plebs and a warm supporter of Caesar, but was obliged to leave Rome and take refuge in Caesar's camp. In the same year he accompanied Caesar to Spain, and after the defeat of Afranius and Petreius, the legates of Pompey, Caesar left him as governor of Further Spain. His cruelty and oppressions caused an insurrection against him at Corduba, but was quelled. Subsequently 2 legions declared against him, and M. Marcellus, the questor, put himself at their head. He was saved from this danger by Lepidus, and left the province in 47 BC, but his ship sank and he was lost at the mouth of the Iberus.
