PAMPHYLIA/SIDE

Pamphylia was a country on the south coast of Asia Minor, south-east of Aspendos, between Lycia and Cilicia, in modern day Turkey. It fell to the Persians in the 6th century BC and to Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. After the death of Alexander in 323 BC the country was ruled by the Seleucid dynasty. Pamphylia became part of the kingdom of Pergamum in the late 3rd century BC, and was bequeathed to the Romans with the rest of the kingdom by Attalus III in 133 BC.

Side was an important coastal city, having been settled by colonists from Kyme in 7th-6th centuries BC. The inhabitants were reputed to be most dishonest and the city was a centre for piracy in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC.
