Ancient Greek World

478 to 36 B.C.

The first coins were believed to have been made around 600 BC in Lydia, in Asia Minor. From there, the idea spread to all the Greek city states. These were scattered around the Mediterranean, in Greece proper, Asia Minor and Italy. Coins initially had religious or decorative designs. The conquests of Alexander and later of Rome led the way to political and personal statements on coins.
