Currently only 23 specimens of this reverse legend are known (information from Ph. Gysen). My specimen is however the only one from officina delta and the only one to have the scarce IMP C M AVR PROBVS PIVS AVG obverse legend. Therefore it is a true unicum and of the highest numismatic interest!

This coin is illustrated and was first published by Ph. Gysen, Antoniniani avec revers exceptionnel pour Probus, BCEN 35/2 (1998), 43-47, Fig. 4; see also article by Johan van Heesch "Deux aureliani exceptionnels de Probus", Revue Belge de Numismatique, Vol. CXXVI (1980), p. 97-101, where the same reverse is illustrated but with MILITVM FIDES legend and no mintmarks.

COLLECTION NO. 1428

Provenance: Paul Francis Jacquier Auction no. 46 (II part of Ph. Gysen Collection) lot no. 452 = ex Ph. Gysen collection = ex Heidelberger Münzhandlung H. Grün, Auktion 20 (1997) Lot 1130.

One of only 3 known specimens in the world with this extraordinary reverse type and the FIDES MILITVM LEGEND (the other being in M. Vosper collection = ex Gysen collection = ex Jacquier auction 45 lot 1537 = ex NAC auction 8 (1995) lot 921 and CNG auction 85 lot 1137). There are 3 additional similar specimens known with the same reverse type but with MILITVM FIDES legend and no mintmarks (one in British Museum, one in Vienna - both examples illustrated in the above article by Johan van Heesch and one in M. Attribution of this coin to the 4th unspecified oriental mint instead of Antiochia (as in RIC V.II) is based on the article by S. Estiot, "L’Empereur et l’usurpateur: un 4e atelier oriental sous Probus"; Studies in ancient coinage in honor of Anndrew Burnett, Spink, London, 2015.

Note: On this coin the cursive digamma (symbol of the 6th officina) looks very "oriental" as opposed my coin no. 705 where the cursive digamma look almost like a latin "S".

NOTE: Apparently it is only the second known example of such a spectacular error in Probus' name as PRBVS (the second example is in M. Vosper's collection; though with officina mark "VI" in the field and not in the exergue like on my example).

FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: -/-//A
WEIGHT 3.75g / DIAMETER: 22 mm
RIC 861 var. (unlisted with A only in exergue)
COLLECTION NO. 1351

Note: A coin with a spectacular error in the obverse legend: POBVS (instead of PROBVS). Not only is this the only example of this specific type known to me, but it is - to my knowledge - the only example of such an error in Emperor's name in the whole coinage of Probus.

The coin is part of the very rare and brief A-Delta (without the KA mintmark) first phase of Serdica's 3rd emmission unlisted by RIC as well as by Pink. Although the exergue is barely legible, under a magnifying glass I see an "A" there rather than a Delta. Nevertheless I will have the coin cleaned which hopefully will make the exergue more legible.

Unique and of the highest numismatic interest. The coin joins another interesting unicum with an erroneous obverse legend in my collection: PRBVS instead of PROBVS - see my coin no. 21 from Siscia.
