Germanicus in curaiss walking left, bearing recovered military standard

The obverse of this coin likely depicts Germanicus' military triumph, an event that must have made quite an impression on young Caligula. The reverse depicts Germanicus (or a statue dedicated to him) walking left, bearing one of two standards that he recovered from Germanic tribes which were taken from General Varus in 9 A.D.

Minted 64 A.D.

This is an extremely important architechtural type, as it is the only known representation of this triumphal arch. No traces of it have survived, and it's exact location is still up for debate. Without this coin type, it's existance would almost certainly be forgotten today.

Curtis Clay says,

"The earliest issue of Hadrian's reign, notable for giving him five honorary titles of Trajan, namely Optimus, Germanicus, Dacicus, Parthicus, and Pater Patriae, all of which however disappeared from his second issue of coins.

Obviously the Senate, upon hearing of Trajan's death in Cilicia and Hadrian's accession at Antioch, voted Hadrian these titles, and the mint immediately put them on the coins, but Hadrian modestly refused the titles, causing them to disappear from the coinage. It would have taken a month or so for news of the Senatorial awards to reach Hadrian in Antioch, and then for news of Hadrian's rejection of the titles to get back to Rome."

This coin is part of a rare and little understood issue thought to be from a provincial mint in Thrace, which copy contemporary Roman AE issues. These Thracian issues show unusually good style, rivaling that of the official Roman mint. The Thracian Ceres dupondius of Claudius is notable for having a 12 o'clock die axis, and centration dimples which immediately show it cannot be a product of the official Roman mint. The style is typically good enough though that these issues are often mis-attributed as normal Roman issues, as was the case with my coin.

This thread from 2009 has served as the best reference for these Thracian AE coins of Claudius that I have been able to find:

Curtis Clay says.................

"The one small issue of low-denomination coins under Trajan, all of 100 AD (COS III), followed by a gap until Caracalla, i.e. until 212-217 AD, is noteworthy but not really explicable.

Jurukova, in her monograph on Deultum, thinks the Trajanic issue might have commemorated "some extraordinary event in the city's political development", perhaps a grant of some priviledge by Trajan. She points out that the Trajanic coinage of Stobi, a Roman municipium in neighboring Macedonia, was also apparently confined to 100 AD, Trajan's third consulship, so maybe Stobi received a similar priviledge at the same time and commemorated it in the same way, though with a larger issue of coins in at least two denominations.

I think it quite possible that Deultum's coins of Trajan were produced by the mint of Rome or from dies cut by Roman engravers, since their style is indeed very close to that of the mint of Rome. Jurukova notes that similarity too but does not attempt to explain it. Stobi's issue of 100 AD, in contrast, is not in Rome-mint style. A study of all provincial bronze coins that seem to have been produced by the mint of Rome might throw more light on this Deultum issue."

This is a very interesting coin, probably at least partially responsible for the reassignment of these eastern AE issues to Antioch as opposed to Commagene, where they had long thought to belong. Note the Flavian looking features on the bust of Tyche.

Rhinoceros advancing left

Rev.
IMP DOMIT AVG GERM
SC

I love this issue for several reasons. First, this little coin represents the only depiction of a rhinoceros in all of Roman numismatics. This fact just intrigues me, it seems so odd that it is such a unique one off appearance. I enjoy the fact that the depiction shows two horns, confirming that it is an African Rhinoceros. This coin led me on a little journey in trying to understand why this animal was depicted, why only once, and why at that particular time. It turns out that this coin was struck to depict a specific rhinoceros, displayed in fights in the Colosseum for the first time.

Martial describes the games in which this took place in his Liber De Spectaculis. The great T.V. Buttrey wrote a fantastic article on this in which he shows that this little coin points to a different date for these games. I dare you to read this article and not want to get one of these coins!

Domitian, the Rhinoceros, and the Date of Martial's Liber' De Spectaculis by T.V. Buttrey

RIC II 681 corr. McAlee 549 Cohen 443

Ex. Lindgren collection, Ex. Butte College Foundation

Extremely Rare

FORVM (seller) says:

"The only plate coin known to us is the McAlee coin. All the references other than McAlee refer to Cohen, and none actually hold an example of the type. We did not find any examples online. Lindgren identified this coin as a Semis. Sear lists Rome and Antioch as possible mints. McAlee identifies the type as struck in Rome for use in Syria."
