These Egyptian issues are not in RIC, but the old standard catalogue for these is Milne, where yours is no. 4492, with the pellet between TOC . CEB. Alfonso VIII~0.jpg
MEDIEVAL, Spain, Castile and Leon, Alfonso VIII531 viewsAlfonso VIII (November 11, 1155 – October 5, 1214), king of Castile and grandson of Alfonso VII, is a great name in Spanish history, for he led the coalition of Christian princes and foreign crusaders who broke the power of the Almohades at the battle of the Navas de Tolosa in 1212.
The gold maravedi of Alfonso VIII is a strange blend of Muslim and Christian worlds. It has a Cross surrounded by Arabic writings!

Is there anyone who can read Arabic?

Gold aurei are about the same size as silver denarii but they were not struck with the same dies. The finest work of the mint's top master engravers was reserved for striking gold. The difference between the artistry of the gold and silver is not always so striking, but no denarius equals the beauty of this coin.

RESTITVTOR LIBERTATIS means: "He has eliminated all his competitors." (Vogt, Orbis, p.162)

This Solidus I have seldom seen. The first Solidi were struck end of AD 310 in Trier, then in Arles. Ticinum started in autumn AD 315 with the issue of these new denomination. This type therefore is one of the earliest Solidi struck in Italy for Constantine. Interesting is its size: With 19mm it is smaller than the later Solidi. And with its thickness too it reminds a bit on the older Aurei!

New World, Maya, Tikal, Guatemala530 viewsMayadigger - Tikal was the home to 45,000 + citizens from 200-800 AD. This truly maginificent site is located deep in the Peten rainforest. The pyramid seen here is approx. 140 feet tall, whose temple is topped with a "cox-comb" roof decoration. In the right foreground is seen the Great Plaza with a number of stone stelae commemorating the city's kings. In the right background is the acropolis, where the elites not only lived, but were also buried with great pomp.

Rome Mint, January - June 70 AD
Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev: CAESAR AVG F COS CAESAR AVG F PR; Bare heads of Titus on l. and Domitian on r., facing one another
RIC 16 (R). BMC 2. RSC 5. BNC 1.
Acquired from Ephesus Numismatics, November 2005.

This denarius was issued during the first year of Vespasian's reign to announce the beginning of a new dynasty. The titles of both Titus and Domitian as Caesars are proclaimed on the reverse. Titus: CAESAR AVG F COS = 'Caesar, son of the the Augustus and consul'. Domitian: CAESAR AVG F PR = 'Caesar, son of the Augustus and praetor'. After the chaos of the Civil War, Rome badly needed stability and Vespasian and his family would provide it. Along with Judaea Capta, dynastic continuity is a major theme of the early coinage.

Lamanai Mask.jpg
New World, Maya, Lamanai, Belize525 viewsMayadigger - This is a detail seen on the previous structure. What you're looking at is known to Meso-American archaeologists as a "Pre-Classic Mask" and are only found on Maya structures from the Pre-Classic time, i.e. 200-400 A.D. This fellow is a "Kinich Ahau" or a "Shining-faced" Lord. Kinich Ahau was the Maya Sun God, but this was also the title of the Maya rulers. As all Maya structures were built onion-style, that is, one layer atop another, it is easy for us to date them when we come across masks such as seen here.Mayadigger

"RIC is in error to state that P P only appeared on Claudius' bronze coins in 50 AD. In fact Claudius became P P very early in 42 AD, and P P appeared immediately not only on his quadrantes, which are specifically dated to 42 by the title COS II, but also on his sestertii and middle bronzes.
Stylistically your coin should not be attributed to Rome, but to a Thracian mint perhaps active only towards the end of the reign. These coins, scarcer than the Rome-mint ones, are not recognized in RIC!" by Curtis Clay. Thank you "curtisclay".

English grenadier of the 18th "Royal Irish" regiment of Foot, 1751512 viewsThe 18th was first raised in 1684, from independent garrison companies in Ireland, under the Earl of Granard and was known as Granard's Regiment of Foot. Granard's Regiment was placed on the English Establishment in 1689. The regiment saw action under King William III at the battle of the Boyne, and all throughout the Irish campaigns, including the fall of Limerick. Serving with the fleet as marines, the regiment received its first battle honor at Flanders, during the assault on the Castle of Namur on August 20, 1695. Having won the admiration of both King and Country, the regiment was designated the Royal Regiment of Ireland. During the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714), the Royal Regiment of Ireland served with distinction at Schellenburg and Blenheim in 1704, Ramilies in 1706, Oudenarde and Lisle in 1708, Malplaquet and Tournay in 1709 and at Bouchain in 1711. In 1747, the regiment was ranked as the 18th Foot and became the 18th Regiment of Foot, or Royal Irish, in July of 1751. The regiment was disbanded after action around the globe in July 1922. Acquired from Tom Cederlind, February 2008.

A reverse type that commemorates Titus's return to Rome after his completion of the Jewish War. Neptune, the god of the sea, would be an appropriate deity to offer thanks to after a safe sea voyage.

This coin is rated as common in RIC, but it's not often seen in trade.

In this case we, took a small boat up a long, turgid river. It can be reached by "road", read 50 mile muddy track. I know, we did it a few years later and never again. In ancient days, Lamanai owed its wealth to being a trade center centrally located between the vast Maya cities of Tikal, Altun Ha, Caracol, and Copan. Die axis: 0°

The Griffin (Greek gryphos, Persian shirdal - "lion-eagle") is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head, with upstanding ear-tufts, and wings of an eagle: as the lion was considered 'King of the Beasts' and the eagle 'King of the Air,' the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. The griffin is generally represented with four legs, wings and a beak, with eagle-like talons in place of a lion's forelegs and feathered, with equine-like ears jutting from the crown of its head. Some writers describe the tail as a serpent, in the manner of a chimera.

Bramsen 0310.JPG
Bramsen 0310. Légion d'Honneur, 1804.501 viewsObv. Laureate head of Napoleon ANDRIEU F below.
Rev.the cross of the order, in the centre of which the eagle of France stands on the fulmen of Jove, encircled with a flat ring, on which the motto, HONNEUR . ET . PATRIE. is impressed. A wreath of the branches of oak and laurel, with their fruit, surrounds the cross behind AUSPICE NEAPOLEONE GALLIA RENOVATA. Exergue, DENON DIRT. JALEY FT.

The engraving is of the highest quality. Some scratches on the obverse, not particularly visible in hand. The scratches on the portrait itself do not penetrate the patination to bare metal.

Laskey's Narrative:
Napoleon having been elected First Consul for life, immediately marked his great event by instituting the order of the Legion of Honour, which, by joining personal decoration with pecuniary stipend, answered two purposes, that of reconciling the people of France to the restoration of artificial rank in society, and also or securing to Napoleon himself the personal attachment of all those connected with the institution; in short it was a cheap, but efficacious mode of giving bribes to all ranks both in military and civil life, and therefore likely to be attended with the best consequences to his own popularity.

On this occasion, Joseph Bonaparte, the Consul's brother, was made the grand officer of the order.

It was also decreed that the legion should be composed of fifteen cohorts, and a council of administration; that each cohort should consist of seven grand officers, twenty commandants, thirty officers, and 350 legionaries; and that the First Consul should always be the chief of the legion, and of the council of administration. The members were to be military men, who had distinguished themselves in the war, or citizens, who, by their knowledge, talents, and virtues, had contributed to establish or defend the republic.

Septimius Severus Color Impression500 viewsA quick colorized marble statue. Hair might be too brown for reality, I believe in older age it was peppered with grey like the famous family painting (the one with Geta scrubbed out), but he looked younger here so artistic license was used. Also, he should really be darker skinned but working on the white surface of the original pic made what I was doing seem dark ennough, in retrospect he should probably be a little more dark toned.12 commentsScotvs Capitis

Deified_Alexander_.jpg
Athena and Deified Alexander497 viewsThe deified Alexander the Great is depicted on the obverse of this coin of Lysimachos, dating to the early third century BC.

In the years following his death Alexander the Great came to be the subject of cult worship throughout the Mediterranean basin. His corpse was appropriated by Ptolemy I who transported it to Egypt, initially interring it at Memphis, then to a mausoleum and center of worship in Alexandria. It survived until the 4th century AD when Theodosius banned paganism, only to disappear without trace.

Athena depicted on the reverse of this coin was the patron goddess of Athens. She came to be worshiped throughout much of the Mediterranean basin during Hellenistic period.
