Reverse: IMPERATOR II. Victory standing facing left, holding wreath in her right hand and palm branch in her left.

This coin commemorates the Roman advance into Scotland which saw the beginning of construction of the Antonine Wall, running across the central belt from the Clyde Estuary in the west to the Forth Estuary in the east. Since Antoninus had already taken the title “Imperator” on his adoption by Hadrian, he was hailed Imperator for the second time after this victory in Britain which was possibly engineered simply in order to give the new emperor military prestige.*Alex

This coin is an enigma because of several reasons:
(1) The ethnic is missed. Only the names are in the legends. Therefore it is difficult to tell the mint. Referring to the style I think the coin belongs to Northern Greece, i.e. Moesia or Thrace. There are small coins from Nicopolis with Severus and Domna on the rev. with strange abbreviations like IO DO. On the other side the scrubby hairstyle of Geta reminds strongly on Marcianopolis.
(2) The legends on both sides are unclear. IMIOC GETA on the rev. is sure and means naturally CEPTIMIOC GETA. But for the missing CEPT left behind the head seems to be not enough space. May be that CEPT can be found right before Geta's head? Then the legend would be perhaps [T[IMIOC - GETA[C CEP], an unusual legend distribution at all.
(3) The obv. legend is absolutely unclear. Actually we would await Severus, and it is his portrait on the obverse. The legend could begin left behind the bust with AV K (like AV KAI CE or AV KL CE). Then on the right side should appear CEVHROC! But the remaining letters don't match! May be that the CE of CEVHROC can be found too behind the bust and is followed by VHROC in front of the bust. But that too would be a strange legend break.
Gospodin Jekov: This coin seems to be unique, possibly an error-hybrid from Markianopolis.
Igor Lasarenko (Museum of Varna): Rather not Moesia, hybrid from Asia Minor may be. Jochen

Turkey, Side - Temple of Athena282 viewsSide’s temple of Athena, together with an adjacent temple dedicated to Apollo and a later Byzantine basilica, occupy a spectacular site on the edge of the city’s ancient harbour. This is wonderful, picture-postcard stuff! Unfortunately, the rest of Side is a dump: a ghastly collection of bars and discos, cheap eateries, souvenir shops and garish hotels, whatever charm it once had totally destroyed by modern mass tourism. The most disappointing ancient town I’ve ever visited. Abu Galyon

Roman, Aurelian Billon Antoninianus282 viewsSear (2000) 11581, RIC 232. Minted in Siscia 272 A.D. (according to Sear).
Obverse: IMP AVRELIANVS AVG; Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Aurelian right.
Reverse: PAX AVGVSTI; Pax walking left, holding olive branch and transverse scepter.
Star in left field, T in right field.
If Sear's dating is correct Aurelian was about sixty two years old when this coin
was minted. I believe this coin image reflects the character of Aurelian better
than any other I have seen. A ruthless general, he was also a person of
intelligence and understanding, who instituted a number of civil and religious
reforms, and began the restoration of the currency. Aware of the
continuing threat from the German tribes, he also began the construction of
a massive wall around the City of Rome, parts of which still exist. James Anderson

Snail and Camel, Crescent.
weight: 4,98g,
diameter: 15,5x10,5mm,
date : cc. 300 A.D.,
" I think that's a camel rising from a shell. The reverse has a figure - probably a shepherd milking a - again probably - goat. The obverse fits into a beloved theme on engraved gems of a large animal rising from a shell (lion, elephant, pegasus, and your camel). Seals share iconography with engraved gems more than coins, so these images appear on lead as well. The reverse image is also well attested on gems. It is part of a wide range of pastoral images that appear on engraved stones. As for this seal, I would say it is definitely Roman. My guess would be around AD 300." by Gert. Thank you Gert.

ROMAN EMPIRE, Elagabalus Fouree Antoninianus281 views" However if his too is just the core of a plated ancient forgery, then it is not the early mint product that I was postulating, but just the work of an ancient forger that could easily be joining an obv. and a rev. derived from two different coins. Checking my cast of Gunner's coin against Heather's image, the two coins do appear to be from the same dies.
Apart from stealing mint dies, counterfeiters sometimes manufactured transfer dies from official coins, which also allowed them to produce counterfeits in mint style. " - Curtis Clay

RIC 49 (R2, this coin). BMC p. 14 note. RSC -. BNC -. Hendin 1481.
Acquired from Ephesus Numismatics, December 2005.
An extremely rare Rome mint quadriga reverse commemorating Vespasian and Titus' Judaean Triumph. It is much more commonly seen from the Antioch mint with an obverse legend recording Vespasian as COS IIII. RIC dates this Rome mint prototype close to the triumph which occurred in 71. RIC co-author Ian Carradice knew of only three other specimens. This specimen serves as the RIC II plate coin.

The first denarius is the common Rome mint example of the priestly implements type. The second coin is the same type struck at Antioch. Also, the second coin's portrait is reminiscent of contemporary tetradrachms struck in the 'Antioch' style.David Atherton

Spain- Taragona- The Forum- Industrial house and Cistern279 viewsThe colonial Forum
All Roman towns had a large square (forum) that was the political, social and business centre of town.
Architecturally, it was a large space surrounded by arcades and varius public buildings, separated into different areas- the religious and the civil. The sacred area was presided over by a temple dedicated to the Capatoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva) or the deified emperor. This temple may have been accompanied by others of less importance. The civil area contained various buildings, the most important of which was probably the basilica, which served as a courthouse, a social meeting place, and the curia, or seat of the council composed of the city´s dignitaries.
Today only the basilica is preserved. This building is divided into three sections, separated by Corinthian columns, and was built in the period of Augustus (in the years before the birth of Christ). It housed the court, or aedes augusti. In front of the basilica there was a square, with various statues, on which several of the city´s streets converged. These streets delimited insulae, or “islands” of houses. The ground floors of the houses contained shops, warehouses and workshops, while the upper floors were where the people lived, crowded together in small rooms. Only the wealthiest of families could afford to live in a domus, a house with one or two storeys, several rooms distributed around an atrium, and other recreational areas.

Huszár 717, Pohl 216-6, Unger 562f, Réthy II 235A, Kaplan Subtype C 279 viewsHungary. Matthias “Corvinus” (Mátyás Hunyadi in Hun.) (1458-1490). AR denar, 16 mm.
Obv: M • MAThIE • R • hVnGARIE •, Four-part shield with Hungarian arms (Árpádian stripes, patriarchal cross, Dalmatian leopard heads, Bohemian lion), raven in escutcheon.
Rev: MATROnA – hVnGAR rosette, Veiled Madonna with infant Jesus to her right, C–lily (privy mark) in fields.
The type was struck 1468-1470 (per Unger), 1468-1481 (per Huszár) or 1468-1484 (per Pohl) with an average fineness of approximately .500 silver, and an average weight of .59023 g. Those with this privy mark were struck in Kaschau (Kassa in Hun., now Košice, Slovakia) under a collective citizenry privy mark in 1468 (per Pohl).
Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 3. It is a highly variable type with four Subtypes. Subtype C is one of the least common, comprising around 10% of the coins in the emission. This is an uncommon privy mark, appearing only on this subtype and on less than 5% of the coins of this type.
Subtype C coins lack a cross at the beginning of the obverse legend, which is M • MAThIE • R • hVnGARIE • (or a minor variant), have an escutcheon, and are without a ring in the raven's beak. They are neither described nor depicted in any of the catalogs.
There is typically a highly stylized Gothic letter T, which looks like the letter C, on coins of this subtype, but this feature is not present on this coin. The reverse legend is typically MATROnA (or a minor variant) rather than PATROnA (or a minor variant) on coins of this type from this mint.

202. CARACALLA278 viewsCARACALLA. 198-217 AD.
The emperor visited Alexandria for intellectual and religious reasons, staying at the Serapeum and being present at the temple's sacrifices and cultural events. Earlier, during the German war, the emperor visited the shrine of the Celtic healing-god Grannus. Caracalla also visited the famous temple of Asclepius in Pergamum and fully participated in its program, which involved sleeping inside the temple compound and having his dreams interpreted.
It was this religious devotion that led to Caracalla's murder in 217. Although suspicious of the praetorian prefect Macrinus, Caracalla allowed himself to be accompanied by only a small, select corps of bodyguards on an early spring trip from the camp at Edessa to the temple of the moon-god at Carrhae, about 25 miles away. During the journey back on 8 April 217, Caracalla was killed. The returning guards claimed the emperor was ambushed while defecating, and that the alleged assassin was one of their own, a soldier named Martialis. Martialis was himself killed by the avenging guards, or so the story went. Suspicion was strong that Macrinus arranged the entire affair.
Caracalla's violent end seemed appropriate for an emperor who, early in his reign, had his own brother killed. Yet the moralizing about fratricide by both ancient and modern historians obscures the energetic, reformist and even intellectual character of Caracalla's reign. Some of the reforms, especially the pay raise for soldiers, would prove burdensome for future emperors, but the changes brought about in the little more than five years of Caracalla's sole rule would have long-lasting implications throughout the empire for generations to come.

The type was struck 1468-1470 (per Unger), 1468-1481 (per Huszár) or 1468-1484 (per Pohl), with an average fineness of approximately .500 silver, and an average weight of .59023 g.
This privy mark was struck in Kremnitz (formerly Körmöcbánya, Hungary, now Kremnica, Slovakia) by Veit Mülstein, oberkammergraf, in 1470 (per Pohl).
Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 4. This is a highly variable type with four Subtypes. Subtype A is the most common variety, comprising around 50% of the coins in the emission. This is a common privy mark, appearing only on this subtype and on around 15% of the coins of this type.
In Subtype A coins, the obverse legend is + M MAThIE • R • VnGARIE (or a minor variant), per Huszár and Pohl, but contrary to the description in Huszár, there is either no escutcheon or just faint hints of an escutcheon, and there is no ring in the raven's beak. They are depicted in Huszár/Pohl but not depicted in Unger or Réthy.
The substitution of the letter E for the letter A in the word PATROn is not described in Huszár (although depicted there, and in Pohl), nor depicted in Unger or Réthy. Mülstein also made this substitution in another emission bearing this privy mark.
