This representation of apollo is probably a roman copy of a statue of Apollo citharede which we can see on Augustus and Antoninus Pius' coins too. This statue was in the temple on the Palatino.

Apollo_Citharoedus.JPG
Apollo kitharoidos, Vatican Museum, a 2nd-century AD colossal marble statue by an unknown Roman sculptor. An Apollo Citharoedus is a statue or other image of Apollo with a Kithara (lyre). Among the best-known examples is this Apollo Citharoedus of the Vatican Museums, a 2nd-century AD colossal marble statue by an unknown Roman sculptor. Apollo is shown crowned with laurel and wearing the long, flowing robe of the Ionic bard. The statue was found in 1774, with seven statues of the Muses, in the ruins of Gaius Cassius Longinus' villa near Tivoli, Italy. The sculptures are preserved in the Hall of the Muses, in the Museo Pio-Clementino of the Vatican Museums. Joe Sermarini

COS III / S C, cithar

Handsome coin. The cithar (ancestor of the Spanish guitar or the Indian sitar) is the instrument played by Apollo. I always wondered what kind of music was played with it. Did it sound more like Spanish, Greek, Arabic, Indian music ?

I suppose this autonomous small coin was minted in the IInd C. This Apollo looks very much like the Apollo playing cithar who was worshiped in Daphne, Antioch's main sanctuary. He must be the Greek version of some northern Syrian traditional young male deity.

Marsyas was a Silen who found the flute which Athene had invented some times before. But when Athene saw in a mirror how awful her face was looking when playing the flute, she throw it away with a curse. Marsyas then learned to play the flute better as everyone else so that he challenged Apollo to a contest. The Muses should be the arbiters. But in this contest Apollo outsmarts Marsyas by singing to the cithara what Marsyas was not able to do with his flute. So he lost the contest and Apollo hung him up in a tree and let him skinned by a Skyth alive. His blood or the tears of the Muses then became the river Marsyas.

A nice elegant depiction of Apollo with remarkable long legs. Looks a bit manieristic.
Apropos: Referring to Ehling all coins from Germe are from Germe in Mysia. Wether there were another Germe too in Lydia is unclear.

Another coin obtained, not for the coin itself, but rather for the countermark. The SPQR countermark used primarily on coins of Nero minted in Lugdunum, these are thought to relate to the uprising of Vindex. Because of its connection with the uprising resulting in the end of Nero, I though it might have a place in my collection.

Notes: Suetonius famously mentioned Nero's Imperial Dupondii & Asses depicting him in the guise of Apollo playing the lyre or kithara, which were struck about 2-4 years before the present coin. As Chris Herndon neatly summarized it, "Nero was the only emperor who was more interested in being an artist than in being an emperor" (CNR XVII.3, 1 Sep 1992, p. 5).

The Thessalian issue was struck on the occasion of Nero's ludic tour of Greece and his "liberation" of Achaea. (The latter, especially, brought him tremendous popularity in Greece and absolute revile among the elites in Rome.) Surely these coins intended to flatter the Emperor, and perhaps express gratitude for his favor.
